Down the hill comes Evelyn
With a cowrie shell necklace and a bottle of gin
She says she’s feeling a whole lot better
Thanks to the mindful meditation and the tropical weather
But that never seems to work for me
Nothing is simple like a lock and key

Since I lost my credit card
Crashed my rental car
Got thrown out of the bar
Where she once waited for me
Out of novocaine
To try to dull the pain
But I flushed it the drain
Now I’m happy just waiting to die

Then I didn’t see her for about 3 or 4 years
She dyed her hair and I grew a beard
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put nothing back together again
So, what chance do they have with us?
Flying one wing, walking single crutch

Then I heard she went back to her natural hair
Got a job doing respite care
Saved enough for a one-way air fare
While I was waiting to die
Stocking shelves in an old warehouse
Sleeping on my brother’s new couch
Scant leisure in my leisure time
Doing nothing but waiting to die

Nowhere is home
Without a landline phone
A mortgage loan
An anchored boat
But when Eden is overthrown
The dregs will roam
The rich might cope
But let’s hope they don’t

Because I lost my credit card
